Hair shrinkage is something every curly experiences. It happens when your curls spring up as they dry, reducing the length of your hair. While shrinkage is a sign of healthy, hydrated hair, it can be frustrating when you want your hair to look longer. There are techniques you can try to minimise this, while keeping your curls looking fabulous.

What is Curly Hair Shrinkage?

Hair shrinkage occurs when curls bounce up as they dry, making the hair look shorter than it actually is. This happens because curly hair coils and bends, and when it dries and loses water weight, it springs up. The amount of shrinkage varies depending on curl type, hair porosity, and moisture level. For some, this can reduce hair length by up to 70%, especially in tighter curl patterns like Type 4 coils.

Shrinkage is a good sign that your curls are healthy and thriving. When curls lack moisture, they tend to look limp and stretched out. So, while it may seem like a setback, shrinkage is a clear indicator that your curls are healthy, bouncy, and hydrated.

Factors that contribute to shrinkage:

  • Moisture Levels: Hydrated hair naturally curls tighter, leading to more shrinkage. That’s why deep conditioning or applying water-based products can make your hair shrink more.
  • Porosity: High-porosity hair tends to absorb moisture quickly and may appear to shrink more as it dries. Low-porosity hair, on the other hand, might hold its length better. You can see more on hair porosity here.
  • Curl Type: Tighter curls, such as Type 4 coils, generally experience more shrinkage than looser curl patterns, like Type 2 waves. Learn more about different curl types here.

How To Minimise Shrinkage

1. Stretch your hair with twist-outs or braid-outs.

One of the best ways to combat shrinkage is by stretching your curls. Twist-outs and braid-outs are popular techniques to stretch the hair while maintaining curl definition. After washing and conditioning, section your hair into small parts, twist or braid them, and allow them to dry completely before unraveling. This technique stretches the hair but also adds volume and reduces frizz.

2. Use heat-free stretching methods.

Heat styling can cause damage, especially to curly hair. Instead, try heat-free stretching methods:

  • Banding: After washing your hair, section it and wrap hair bands or mini scrunchies along the length of each section. This helps to stretch the hair as it dries.
  • Pineapple Method: Gather your hair into a loose ponytail at the top of your head with a silk scrunchie overnight. This stretches your curls a little to reduce shrinkage.

3. Incorporate hair oils.

Using hair oils like argan oil, jojoba oil, or coconut oil can seal moisture in your curls, reducing shrinkage. Our Nourishing Hair Oil is lovely to use to seal in hydration and elongate your curls. Try applying some of the oil to damp hair after using the Hydrating Creme. This creates a barrier that prevents water from evaporating too quickly, helping to maintain some length.

4. Weigh down your curls by applying more product.

Using more Hydrating Creme or Gel than normal can add weight to your curls. You could also try using a richer product like our Curl Conditioner or Co-wash as a leave-in conditioner. Focus on evenly distributing the product from root to tip. Use a wide-tooth comb to distribute it through your hair, which will elongate your curls and reduce shrinkage.

It's important to find the right balance with the amount of product when trying this. Experiment with different quantities to find the perfect amount for your curls.

5. Regularly trim your ends.

It might sound counterintuitive, but regular trims can help minimise shrinkage. Split ends and breakage can make your hair appear shorter, and healthy ends create a more even curl pattern, reducing excessive shrinkage. Check out our Salon Locator to find your nearest curly salon.

6. Use a diffuser to stretch your curls.

If you like to use a little heat, a diffuser is a great option for reducing shrinkage. Dry your curls on a low heat setting and try hover diffusing, instead of cupping your curls in the diffuser bowl which adds definition. As you dry your hair, gently pull sections to stretch the curls while diffusing. See here for different diffusing techniques you can try.

7. Try different protective styles.

Protective styles like twists, braids, or buns can help stretch your curls and reduce shrinkage over time. These styles keep your hair elongated while protecting it from humidity and friction, which can cause shrinkage. Explore our gorgeous range of curly hair accessories here.

How To Embrace Shrinkage

While it's completely fine to minimise shrinkage, it's also good to embrace it. Shrinkage is a natural part of having curls, and it showcases your hair’s texture and bounce. Rather than focusing solely on length, prioritize the health of your curls. Remember that shrinkage is often a sign that your hair is well-hydrated and healthy which is great news!
