How do hormones affect curly hair?

How do hormones affect curly hair?

We get asked this question a lot, so thought we'd answer in our TikTok Q&A series. Here's Lizzie with the answer...

Question: "Hey can hormones kill of curls? My hair used to be so curly and now it's just wavey"

Answer: Yes, hormones massively affect your hair. So puberty, having a baby, menopause, all three of those things can really change your hair. I'm dealing with much more wavy hair these days after having a baby 18 months ago. So I think I'm a good person to answer your questions because I can give you some good wavy hair tips.

Number one, try a stronghold gel. This is our Mega Hold Gel. It's actually amazing on waves. And it's not something people necessarily think it would be perfect for waves because you think a strong hold gel I think as being something more for curly curly curls, but actually because it's sticky. And it really holds the curls up in the drying process and then creates a cast around the curls and leaves a stronger hold. And that's actually really good for wavy hair. So I would give that a try.

Second thing that you can do in the styling process. So when your hair's wet after you've applied it curl creme, do some finger coiling. And that can really just help encourage the curl pattern. And so that's manipulating your curls a little bit, but it definitely helps as well as brush styling. So everyone loves the Denman brush. It doesn't have to be the Denman, but using a brush to twist those curls into shape, and we'll pop some tutorials on our page for Denman, brush curling, and finger coiling to help you.

Whether you’re new to Only Curls, or just starting your curly journey, how much product to use is often the first question that comes to mind. It’s one of the most common questions we come across, and it’s a tricky one! The ideal amount of product depends on so many factors: hair thickness, length, and texture.

Here are some great starting points for each of our products. You can always reduce or increase this as you try out the products, in fact, we encourage this! Experimenting with the products is the best way to find what suits your hair best. 💗

Using a mousse is a fantastic lightweight styling technique to help boost volume, smooth frizz and define curls. It's also a perfect to use for refreshing next day curls.

Here’s the how-to... 😊
